The Making of Hospital Friends In order to make Hospital Friends as accurate and informative as possible, Mike Berenstain based the book’s illustrations on sketches he made while visiting the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Read his account of the process, accompanied by images of the finished book including the sketches that inspired it! Being given the run of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to conduct visual research was essential to making The Berenstain Bears’ Hospital Friends as medically accurate and authentic as possible. It was also satisfying for me as an artist to experience and record the behind-the-scenes workings of this great institution. An additional personal reward for me was the opportunity to witness my wife, Laura, in her native environment as pediatric anesthesiologist–something I would not otherwise have been allowed to do – there is no normal provision for “Spouse Visiting Day” in the OR. -More-
SPECIAL FEATURE The Making of Hospital Friends
Stan & Jan - A Legacy of Caring The Stan and Jan Berenstain Healthy Kids Foundation is named in honor of the husband-and-wife co-creators of the Berenstain Bears series and inspired by the childhood-celebrating and family-affirming message of their life’s work. Stan and Jan—known then as Stanley and Janice—met while they were both students at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art and married in 1946. The pair worked successfully as cartoonists for several years before entering the world of children’s publishing in 1962 with The Big Honey Hunt. Edited by none other than Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, then-president and editor-in-chief of Random House’s Beginner Books Division. The Big Honey Hunt was the first of what would become several hundred Berenstain Bears titles, each with their own unique message of gentle caring crafted from true family experiences.  Stan and Jan’s stories have since forged many generations of Berenstain Bears followers the world over. -More-
Hospital Friends The Stan and Jan Berenstain Healthy Kids Foundation will receive on-going financial support from the publication of The Berenstain Bears’ Hospital Friends by Mike Berenstain, forthcoming from HarperCollins in April 2015. All of the author’s royalties from sales of this book will be donated directly to the Foundation. The Berenstain Bears’ Hospital Friends represents the fulfillment of the Berenstains’ long-cherished dream of adding a story about visiting the hospital to the Berenstain Bears series, which has for decades been a source for children coping with new experiences and difficult health problems. For years, this dream remained on the backburner, but when Mike Berenstain married Dr. Laura Diaz—pediatric anesthesiologist at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)—they immediately began making it a reality. -More-
A Partnership of the Heart The Stan & Jan Berenstain Healthy Kid Foundation’s newest partnership is with the Heart to Heart Foundation. This partnership came about, in part, through the efforts of Mike Berenstain’s wife, Dr. Laura K. Diaz. Laura is a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist. She was part of a team of medical personnel which was organized by Heart to Heart to travel to Tomsk in Siberia to train Russian pediatric cardiac teams in surgical techniques. Heart to Heart is expanding their program to Peru and asked the Berenstain Foundation to provide support and funding for this effort. Detailed info about their Russian program is available on their website. -More-
